English

Pope John Paul II Preparatory School’s English Language Arts program prepares students with the necessary knowledge and 21st-century literacy skills to succeed at university and workforce arenas. The English department emphasizes critical and divergent thinking, problem-solving, active listening, recognizing patterns and anomalies, and evaluating and questioning source material. Students will complete regular practice of complex text, become disciplined in reading and writing using evidence from literary and informational text, and build mastery through literary content and informative text.

English courses include a diverse literature study ranging from standard 6th-12th grade Language Arts curriculum,  honor level, advanced study, and dual enrollment. Chosen literature includes genre-based text, cultural and linguistically diverse texts, and thought-provoking material. The influence of Catholicism in literature is explored through selected text and class discussion.
